Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has slammed Arsenal football club after they lost their opening Premier League match to Brentford.
“We just must NOT excuse or Accept mediocrity,” Paul Kagame tweeted. The Rwanda’s government has been a sponsor of the north London team since 2018 to propagate “Visit Rwanda” logo on Arsenal’s jersey.
Arsenal lost their match 2-0 against Brentford on Friday (13 August 2021) at the Brentford stadium.
The President went on Twitter to vent his displeasure. He said;
“We just must NOT excuse or Accept mediocrity. A team has to be built with purpose to win win win. So that when we lose….it was not to be expected! I am sure we all know on whose shoulders the heaviest burden rests. I hope they know too or even accept it!!! End”
“What?? It’s football,it’s a loss of Arsenal at/to Brentford. Brentford deserved to win and they did. The game itself aside Arsenal and the fans don’t deserve to kind of get used to this….NO !!! I say this as one of the big fans of Arsenal. The change has taken to long to come!”
The match was the opener for the 2021 – 2022 Premier League season. For the Brentford’s it was a joyous christening of their grounds after a year in lockdown. However, the same cannot be said for the Arsenal especially for the Rwanda’s who have slapped huge sponsorship deal on the club to promote tourism to the east African state.
Paul Kagame further went on; “It’s been a struggle of about decade(s) -ups&downs-more downs until this point. Can’t we have a plan that really works?? One part to look at is how we deal in the market- players we buy to execute the plan. The touch&go mentality does not bring change.”
It is reported that the Rwanda’s government has had a sponsorship deal with Arsenal worth more than £30 million since 2018. Part of the deal includes the “Visit Rwanda” logo which affixed on the club’s jersey.
